Addict Gaming Hands On: Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil is a series I’ve personally not paid much attention to over the years, mainly because of the very “Eastern” feel the game had, however after playing Resident Evil 5 from https://www.fullgamepc.com/ – it appears that’s all changed. Being developed in an internal Capcom studio, the game’s looking to be released on the 13th of March 2020 after being delayed earlier this year. However will Resident Evil fanboys be satisfied by the blood filled final product? Keep reading to find out. The build we played opened with a short Cutscene/Tutorial hybrid, demonstrating how certain objects can assist you throughout gameplay, most of them being standard elements in a shooter these days – Health Packs, Ammo and so on. Health packs of course being herbs that you apply in the form of a spray and Ammo being hidden around the map in boxes. The gameplay stays very true to previous Resident Evil games, as it should, however the controls make the game feel much more “Western” than previous games – Something that, in my opinion, the previous title could have done with.

As we progressed through the level, we ran into the usual Zombies, plus a couple of formidable foes.

The first of which being an executioner that runs at you with a gigantic axe, a foe that took a fair bit of lead – but ultimately posed a fulfilling challenge. The standard zombies came in a mix of Caucasian & Black walking dead, which we imagine were added after the racism controversy earlier this year. The bog standard zombie in Resident Evil 5 does seem fairly ineffective in small quantities, however when they start attacking you in larger amounts with twice as much agility, the way you play the game completely changes – you’re forced to pick off the stronger/faster enemies first, always aiming for the head. The final guy we took down in Resident Evil 5 was a pretty monstrous looking chap, standing a good 7+ feet tall, wielding a pretty gritty chainsaw [You can check this guy out in the E3 demo video].

It took a good 5-10 minutes to kill him after running backwards & forwards shooting him in the face, throwing grenades at his feet. I saw a lot of people struggling with this boss, mainly down to the battle being in a small enclose area – so it was pretty hard to avoid him and his chainsaw! The visuals in Resident Evil 5 are really what make the game stand out with the gameplay looking pretty close to the CG announcement trailer released back in 2005. Rumour has it that the game will be running on Unreal 3, instead of the Framework engine Capcom and renowned for using, but unfortunately we can’t seem to get any solid details on the engine status at this time. Whichever engine it was running, the game looks great and offers the bundle you would normally see in todays games – Super High Res Textures, great lighting effects and smooth animation. So far we’ve only seen areas of the game in a desert environment, so we hope Capcom deliver a good variation in environments by the ship date next year.

The aiming did appear to be a tad slow and awkward, especially as we didn’t actually feel any auto-aim in the game – Usually console games do have some sort of auto-aim, especially on easier difficulties, so hopefully we might see that in the final version of the game next March. When you do actually land a shot on one of your brain-dead foes, it does look extremely cool – they react in a believable way, and some shots even remove chunks of flesh, sometimes even whole limbs. Larger enemies, understandably, only react after a few shots – occasionally stumbling to the ground, or just displaying a slight twitch. Throughout the game you’ll also be partnered up with Seva, a young girl who’ll be fighting alongside you in the campaign [Your co-op buddy will play as Seva too].

Most of the time you’ll only notice her presence when she’s either A) being held down by a zombie or B) requesting a boost to an unreachable level. Of course if they were to make her into the new Xena, it would make the game a bit too easy, so there’s a good balance in there that Resident Evil fans will appreciate. Overall the game feels like a triple A title, which will offer a great package when it releases March 2020.
