Lighthouse (2019) Review
A constant punch to the gut, with Greek mythology underpinnings. No other film like it. Aspect ratio reflects the olden times technology and gives a nostalgia factor that is in stark contrast to a cold blooded narrative. Natural lighting serves to plunge us in darkness and then expose us to unrelenting grimness in the light of day. Like going into sea depths and then surfacing gasping for air, wondering what has just happened. Willem Dafoe is an acting genius and should be so honored in his lifetime. Pattinson steps up to the plate and gives his best performance. The movie makes pitch perfect use of the unreliable narrator genre. (Or are there two?) Am chilled to the bone, like I’ve been soaked by the roiling North Atlantic. If you like Welles, Poe, Kafka, Ingmar Bergman, and the Greeks, wrapped up in one chilling package, see this.
