ChatGPT for macOS no longer requires a subscription

It’s available for Apple Silicon Macs running at least macOS Sonoma.

The macOS ChatGPT desktop app is now available to everyone, provided you’re using an Apple Silicon Mac (unfortunately, this excludes Intel users) and running macOS Sonoma or higher. OpenAI initially rolled out the app to Plus subscribers last month and has now made it accessible to all.

Interestingly, ChatGPT has an official macOS client before a Windows one, despite Microsoft being OpenAI’s key partner. This might be due to Windows 11 integrating the OpenAI-powered Microsoft CoPilot directly into its OS. Additionally, OpenAI and Apple are collaborating on Apple Intelligence, which is set to launch later this year (with the exception of Europe).

The Mac app features a customizable keyboard shortcut (option-space by default) for quickly typing chatbot queries from anywhere in macOS. Apart from this, the app offers the same appearance and functionality as the ChatGPT website, including support for custom GPTs, but in a native app form. It also allows you to upload files, photos, and screenshots.

You can download and install ChatGPT for macOS from OpenAI’s website.
