X-Men: New Mutants Review

The New Mutants may be a mess, but it’s an endearing one at that. Compared to Dark Phoenix, it’s a huge upgrade, and the young cast deliver in a way that ensures these characters get the big screen treatment they deserve…even when the movie lets them down. But is this an engrossing and entertaining dip into an entirely different corner of this universe?

Watch our Review to see if it’s worth making a trip to the movies. Despite negative reviews, the film portrays the story of the New Mutants in a contemporary way without feeling forced. Being a fan of the comics, I was a little irked at some of the changes in the characters, but now that I think about it, “that” particular coupling could have been possible even in the past (avoiding spoilers) which would have been taboo at the time. The cinematography was excellent: lots of dark colors and dream like sequences. Some of the scenes tend to end abruptly. They seem unfinished, but it goes together with the narrative being told of not quite having enough information about what is going on. It is mysterious. The more horror driven story also is a nice deviation from the standard hero vs villain/end of the world plot that most super hero films have beat to death. The acting was very good. No one was stiff or alienating. It was tied in well with the rest of the films in the series as to give the audience a context of time and place.

Also, kudos to them for casting an actual Native American to play a Native American. While her acting wasn’t the best of the bunch, she did very well. Overall, it’s a good film if you are open to a new take on a comic book story. If you’re expecting to see a literal translation from page to book, you will be disappointed.
