New Star Trek Movie In Development From Discovery Writer
Paramount is currently developing another new Star Trek movie, and the latest one will be written by Star Trek: Discovery’s, Kalinda Vazquez.
Paramount is developing another new Star Trek movie, but this one will be written by Star Trek: Discovery‘s Kalinda Vazquez. Following the conclusion of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek trilogy, the massively popular universe returned to the small screen. Star Trek: Discovery‘s release in 2017 helped restart the IP’s presence on TV and has been a huge hit. The renewed focus on TV brought Patrick Stewart back for Picard, and there are several other live-action and animated shows in development for CBS All Access/Paramount+.
While Star Trek is thriving on the small screen again, Paramount has struggled to find the right path to take for the next movie. Star Trek Beyond was a financial disappointment in 2016 and left the studio searching for a way to generate more interest in the next big-budget adventure. Quentin Tarantino developed a movie for some time, as did Legion and Fargo creator, Noah Hawley. There were also various attempts to make Star Trek 4, but so far Paramount hasn’t figured out what story to tell with the next Star Trek movie.
In a new report from Deadline, it has been revealed that Paramount hired Kalinda Vazquez to write a new Star Trek movie. Vazquez is already familiar with the franchise after serving as a consulting producer and writer on Star Trek: Discovery season 3. She was involved with ten episodes in season 3 but only received a teleplay credit for episode 10, “Terra Firma, Part 2.” Vazquez’s other credits include Prison Break, Nikita, Once Upon a Time, Runaways, Fear the Walking Dead, and Star Trek: Short Treks. Details on the movie have yet to be revealed, but it is based on an original idea from Vazquez. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is attached to produce.
The hiring of Vazquez could be a sign of Paramount wanting to build on the success of Star Trek: Discovery and give the next Star Trek movie to someone who is already involved in the franchise. That doesn’t mean that the new movie will be connected to Star Trek: Discovery, though. While the franchise has had similar transitions with the shows before, it is too early to tell if Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham and the rest of her crew will make the jump to the big screen.
With little to no details on what this new Star Trek movie will be about or when it will arrive, it might be best for fans to not get too excited just yet. It has become a bit of a habit for Paramount to put a new Star Trek movie into development every year or so. The last few attempts haven’t made much progress but hopefully Vazquez manages to get her movie made before too long.
